As the Spring season kicks off, it starts to rejuvenate the mind. Spring is the beginning of a warmer and greener experience, when the earth springs to life with fresh colors and aromas, and suddenly everything is new again.

Spring is also a great season for farmers markets; if you’ve been around the Washington DC metropolitan area, you’ll know that there are plenty. With the better weather and the freshly grown products, going to a farmers’ market is a welcome diversion.

It’s fun to go through the markets full of organically-grown and visually tempting produce on a mission to create that perfect meal. Everything from the aspect of the products to the connection with the people who brought them to market makes it a wonderful adventure.

Farmers’ markets bring us a step closer to food’s natural origin. Vegetables, meat, cheese, and even artisanal beverages can all be found at a farmers’ market – cheaper, healthier, and in their natural form. They give us a refreshing break from the processed and packaged foods that we’re used to seeing at conventional supermarkets.

Many are inspired by the #MadeInDC movement, as it forms part of the local economy. Farmers put in a lot of effort from their own hands to cultivate their products as healthily and organically as possible, and it’s good to know that once in a while your food is made by real human beings, rather than processed entirely by machines with predetermined mass-market methodology and cost-reduction ingredient substitutes.

Spring certainly brings a lot of things, and award-winning #MadeInDC Chocotenango bars are some of them. Hand-crafted from some of the highest-quality and most natural cocoa beans available, each bar makes us proud of what we do. Several farmers’ market organizers share this vision, which is why Chocotenango can be found at two farmers’ markets in the region.

On Saturdays, you’ll see us from 8am to 12pm at the Old Town Alexandria Farmers’ Market, at 301 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314. During Sundays from 9am to 1:30pm, we’ll be in the Bethesda Central Farmers’ Market at 7600 Arlington Rd, Bethesda, MD 20814.

Have an organic and chocolate-filled Spring!

Presidents’ Day is here! After combining our chocolates with a few carefully selected wines and liquors recently, a particular drink comes to mind for this festivity – the El Presidente cocktail. You’d be surprised at what you can make out of some light run mixed with grenadine and orange.

We personally think everything blends in just right, and with the right proportions, you can make a colorful, tasty cocktail. What we like about this drink is that it’s simple to make. In a shaker with ice, you just add 2 parts rum, 1 part vermouth, 1/2 part orange juice, 1/4 part of grenadine, and a dash of our favorite orange bitter from DC Embitterment. Mix, garnish it with a slice of orange zest, and you’re done.

If you’re attending a party or having one on your own, El Presidente can become your best friend. You can make one drink, or multiply the proportions and entertain your friends!

While easy to make, it’s also tasteful and matches the holiday. We prefer using natural orange juice and we’d recommend you to do so as well. Sweetened and other juices have a big impact on the flavor, and natural almost always tastes better.

El Presidente also has a pretty nice presentation. If you serve it in a cold cocktail glass and add a slice of orange zest on the rim it instantly looks great. The presentation can make or break a drink. Plus, who doesn’t like a fancy orange garnish on their cocktail?

Just like that, you’ve got an easy solution to make a holiday drink for yourself and others.

We are going to tell you a secret. There’s something that goes really good with the Presidents’ Day cocktail as well; a chocolate bar. There are conventional chocolate bars, and then there are Chocotenango bars. You could go for the first one, but you’d be missing out on a taste that can only be handcrafted. Chocolate doesn’t taste the same after trying the Caribbean cocoa in Chocotenango bars. Did we say it’s made in DC? In addition we did a collaboration with Modern Bar Cart and DC Embitterment, and you can get two of their bitters and two of our chocolates for pairing your cocktail experience.

At the end of the day, the thing that matters most is that you enjoy the celebration. You’re more likely to enjoy it if you have some El Presidente cocktails and Chocotenango bars, though.

Enjoy Presidents’ Day!
